Trans Awareness Week | Samantha's Story

Name: Samantha (she/her)

Well, here we go then, I'm transgender and go by the name Samantha.

I would like to take this time to say a good hello to all LGBT transgender people out there.

So, I will cut to the chase and start with my life story and how I came to be Samantha.

As far as I can go back in my life, I always felt that I was the wrong sex, but I didn’t discover this until I was nine years of age at school. When I was at school, I prefered the company of girls because I found that the other boys were very 'confident' (and not in the best way either), which made me feel very isolated and bullied.

After coming to a realisation when I was nine, I knew this understanding was going to change everything and make a big difference in my life.

Unfortunately, my family thought what I was doing back in those days wasn’t normal, which was dressing up in my mother’s clothes.

This is when I noticed I was different to them but felt like I couldn’t keep this up because my 'actions' was hurting the family. However, when I left home I felt like I was able to express my identity freely. Despite this, I did get married twice but I continued to explore my identity through dressing in my wives clothes, which expectedly led to divorce.

So, in the year 2017, I decided to come out and live the rest of my life as a new (yet familiar) person. I knew this had taken me a long time for this to happen blossom but it was worth the journey. I am happy now with my new life and look forward to the future.

But the story of my life starts way before I was nine.
